Workplace Violence and Harassment Prevention
Everyone should be able to work without fear of violence and harassment, in a safe and healthy environment.
Pay Attention to Risk Areas:
Working with unstable or volatile people
Working alone, or with just a few people
Working late nights or very early mornings
Working in a high-risk geographical location
Working in a ‘toxic’ environment
Culture of fear
Poor communication
Conflict, bullying, malicious rumors, disrespectful behaviour
Examples of non-physical and physical violence hazards:
Threatening behaviour (e.g. shaking fists)
Verbal or written threats (e.g. direct, conditional, veiled)
Scaring the victim (e.g. playing pranks)
Verbal abuse (e.g. harassment, bullying: intimidates, humiliates or demeans a person)
Physical attacks (e.g. assault)
Warning Signs of Violence
Direct or indirect threats to harm another employee, physically attacking another person, stalking
Intimidating, threatening, or directing abusive language or behaviour toward another person
An individual who has made reference to or has brought a weapon of any kind into the workplace
Substance use or abuse, suicidal comments/contemplation, extreme changes in behaviour; isolation, aggression
Behaviour that is intimidating, harassing, bullying or aggressive
An employee who regularly conflicts with coworkers or managers
Behaviour or actions that are potentially violent such as throwing objects, waving fists and destroying porperty
What Actions to take if you feel you are in danger of or are a victim of Violence or Harassment
1. Get to a safe location
2. Seek help at the location
3. Report incident to your StaffCLICK contact
4. Work with the StaffCLICK contact to resolve the immediate and ongoing issue
